Info

Along BR163 Highway near Belterra, south of Santarem, Brazil
This highway is being paved and will represent a major transport artery cutting through the Brazilian rainforest. Along the length of it a lot of agribusiness is setting up farms, most notably soya.
The road allows access for first loggers, then ranchers, then farmers to use the land. Land clearing involves felling and burning trees. The extent of deforestation is a contentious issue between the agribusiness and environmental lobbies.
