This public school of 1,530 primary and secondary students has, like other schools in the province, a curriculum which includes classes and projects focussing on themes of coexistence, peace and nonviolence.<br />
Primary school students. They are given a book entitled "Manual of Coexistence" as part of their curriculum. Here they are on their way to see a film on tolerence and ethics.

  • Ghanzanfar, Logar province Afghanistan,  Girls at the Bibi Amina #1 school in class. The school is run by CARE, and ran as an underground school during the Taliban time. However, for many of these girls this is their first school class ever.<br />

Delighted to be back at University and finally finish her degree course, Frozan Assadi, 27, is finally going to graduate. The Taliban and years of civil war has seen her manage to study only for 4 of the last 12 years. Now she will finally get her degree if she passes these exams!<br />

  • Central Jail Kathmandu, Nepal. Boy visiting his father in Kathmandu main jail. The boy was until early June a resident in the jail because there was no social services to care for him that he was jailed with his father.<br />

Jose Lucas, 12, works with his mother Alberta Benabides, outside a mine. Lucas, due to his having to work is barely literate despite attending school sporadically. Alberta, a widow of a miner who died 5 years ago of silicosis. Widows of miners and their children scour the tailings outside the mine to look for silver ore. She collects the rocks and breaks them open in the hot sun. The richer pieces she and Lucas carry home to sell.

Alberta Benabides, a widow of a miner who died 5 years ago of silicosis. Widows of miners are allowed to scour the tailings outside the mine to look for silver ore. She collects the rocks and breaks them open in the hot sun. The richer pieces she carries home to sell. She usually works with her son Jose Lucas,12, who due to his having to work is barely literate despite attending school sporadically.

Lucas, 12 shares a bed with his younger sister Gladys, 6, and his mother Alberta. Lucas and his older brother Marco, 16, work in the mines to help his family make ends meet.

At the base of the mountain, CDR, a Bolivian NGO,  have a feeding programme for children who live or work at the mine, providing free breakfasts and lunches for 230 children.

Gladys Benabides, 6, one of the 6 children of Alberta and her late husband, a miner who died 5 years ago of silicosis from working in the mines. She attends San Cristobal school, part of a CARE project to get miners children in to the classroom through education lessen the liklihood of them needing to work in the mines.

Part of the new chinese economy, the Fuping Servants School in Beijing's eastern outer suburb trains 130 country girls and laid off workers the skills needed to start a new career as domestic servants. Doll used here is for demonstration purposes in a child care class.<br />
